ON PAR WITH PAUL: Dogwood Hills Resort & Gardens No. 10 - Family, Legacy and Native American history

Dogwood Hills Resort and Gardens is a hidden gem in Flat Rock, Alabama. A true from nothing to something absolutely worth the short trip from Chattanooga.

Doris Slater and her late husband Bryce built it in 1974, they started with no money but a grand idea and built the bulk of the course with no outside help.

Doris, now in her 70's works the grounds daily, her nephew Matt Hill is the course superintendent says he tries to keep up with Doris, but it's not easy.

Hill helped us feature hole No. 11, a beautiful hole with a reward for long drivers who can catch the downside of the hill and be rewarded with a shorter approach shot, but be warned the elevated green plays longer than you think.

Tee shots that find the right woods come with a little Native American history on No. 11. There's a cave like area where Hill says Cherokee would stop and rest with a fire while hunting. The stone walls there are colored from the flame and smoke of the fire.

No. 11 has a rose garden just above the green and views of surrounding holes with water.
