School vouchers

Some Tennessee educators don't want the school voucher program to be statewide.

Teachers were on the capitol steps in Nashville on Tuesday saying they believe the voucher program would take funding away from public schools.

As written by Governor Bill Lee, the program would give about $20,000 students a voucher to attend private schools statewide.

Educators say this is not supported by Tennesseans.

“Public education is instrumental in leaving a lasting family legacy, providing access to opportunities for all, regardless of socioeconomic status, enabling children to reach their full potential,” said Angela Wynn with Public Schools Strong Tennessee.

Earlier this year, Governor Lee said this program would not impact funding for public schools.

Governor Lee said the budget for this year is putting more money toward public schools than the voucher program.
